Finding the right size trekking poles Most trekking poles come in adjustable lengths with a locking mechanism to secure the pole at different heights. It is important to state that during our testing, not a single pole failed catastrophically from normal use, and only a few failed during heavy-duty use.
While heavy-duty trekkers venturing to remote destinations want to make sure they get the most durable pole, all other users will probably be satisfied by the durability of any pole in our review. Some products in our review are purpose-built for specific activities, while others may be used for most or all backcountry activities.
Some poles include various baskets and tips to adapt to different trail or off-trail conditions. Most users don't need a pole that will perform on loose talus approaches or on long treks through developing nations. That said, some poles in our review can do all of it with ease.
For instance, the MSR Dynalock is versatile enough to be used in any situation you might need a pole, from day hiking and long backpacking trips to technical climbs and backcountry ski tours.
Most folding poles are weaker than their telescoping counterparts, and thus can't be recommended for rugged terrain while carrying a heavy backpack, but the Dynalock somehow does it all. The Alpine FLZ is another highly versatile pole, only losing points for its heavier weight, which makes it less useful on alpine climbs.
The lightweight poles in our review are great for mountain running, ultralight backpacking, technical climbing, day hikes, and on-trail backpacking with heavier packs. The only activities we wouldn't use them for are international trekking and off-trail travel with heavy loads.
They also can be used with snow baskets for glacier travel or high alpine traverses in the early summer. Other poles come with a ton of baskets and tip attachments to help them perform well across the board. If you spend time hiking on soft rock like the sandstone of the American Southwest, we recommend rubber tips because they won't scratch and permanently alter the appearance of the rock.

I was surprised you were even able to put together a list of 10 trekking poles worth considering then I saw 2 of them are the same poles with different branding. Are any of these fixed length besides the Black Diamond Z poles? You touched on cleaning poles, but for telescoping poles, storing them disconnected also helps maintain their function especially after use in humid conditions. No fixed length. I have used fixed-length poles mind you, including CF ones, but they break a lot.
Not worth the hassle. Folding poles are really a good alternative to a fixed-length pole in terms of rigidity. Very stable. For women with small hands, this can make a big difference in comfort, especially on multi-day trips where ill-fitting grips can chafe your hands.
Love my CNOC trekking poles with long cork handles and thick and lightweight carbon fiber poles with parts to purchase to make a replacement of a section for whatever reason. Priced per inch the same as the rest. Also what other brands offer replacement parts online.
I love my Cnoc Trekking Poles too. Regarding the Overpriced comment, they are comparable with some others in this list and made in the USA!
Glad to see the Cascade Mountain poles make the list. Tarptent makes little nylon pockets that tie to the top of the tent or tarp that fit the handles and keeps them off the ground. Something like an Ursack for pole handles?
The material might be available online. I saw a returned Ursack with defective stitching marked for clearance at the local REI. My mice issues have been mainly with their apparent love of wool yarn, I guess for lining nests. I wonder if putting an old wool sock over the pole handle would distract them from attacking the pole while sacrificing the sock. But I do overthink things sometimes….
Thanks Ronald. Looking for something to protect the handles for a traditional point up pitch. I got them for my Durston Xmid 1 tent, but found the carbide tip up worked better for this tent.
