Seb - Enigma2Illusion - The amount of time spent moving the mouse will not impact the mount volume times. Testoslav - You likely aren't battling the NSA head on You can move your wireless mouse hour long and NSA can have every your move recorded ;- Even wired mouse and keyboard can be monitored from distance, but in today's wireless world we are making it really easy for them.
WRVC - Mounir has implemented in the latest 1. The random strength indicator is awesome! Good implementation. The more you move the mouse the more you'll increase the entropy. Moving your mouse for 1 second will have a certain amount of entropy, and moving it for 10 seconds will certainly have more entropy. But how much entropy is practically sufficient? Luckily for us, Thomas Pornin has crunched the numbers and it turns out that bit is enough.
Edit:So, also according to Thomas , 9 seconds are enough to generate bit of entropy. This question isn't really answerable as it depends on how randomly you can move your mouse. If you can move your mouse truly randomly for 1 minute, it would likely be far better than moving your mouse up and down for Problem is people are really bad at being random and very good at finding and making patterns.
Thus, it is fairly likely that your movements won't be completely random and if a pattern of some type forms, then the longer time could add very little or might even take some security away depending on how their algorithm works. A lot of such algorithms just sum up the motion to form a random seed for a cryptographic pseudo-random number generator and then use the output from that PRNG to generate a key. I am worried that I have somehow compromised the security of my VeraCrypt container by moving the mouse outside of the window where the mouse movements are collected before pressing FORMAT.
You can move the mouse anyway and anywhere you like. You can continue mouse movements when the end of the bar has been reached, but it's unnecessary in the real world. If you move the mouse outside the VeraCrypt window, all that does is not progress the bar as obviously the mouse is now outside the scope of VeraCrypt, but there are no security implications doing this.
As I understand it, the idea of having a progress bar was to encourage those users who were not inclined to move the mouse around much at all.
Simple as that. The wording saying 'the longer you move it the better' confused me. Still no security implications and I'm all good? Even if some time has passed before pressing format?
So my container is still fine? And that isn't a security concern? There is only one task you need to achieve. That's it! Anyone who knows enough of the internal processes of generating entropy would know enough to stop acting the goat. Random does not mean drawing boxes, circles or anything else. Perform random side-to-side and up-down movements including diagonal movements while moving your mouse up-down.
I tested on my Windows 10 Pro bit running 21H1 OS and did not experience any slowness when I moved my cursor into the picture on that screen.
The developer has provided the "Randomness Collected From Mouse Movements" color bar indicator to help users know when they have moved the mouse enough. You can continue to move your mouse randomly even after it reaches the maximum green to continue creating random pool.
The longer you move it, the better. This significantly increases the cryptographic strength of the encryption keys.
The greatest weakness is always the human element of using weak passwords, writing their password on post-it notes and no backups of their data.
