The entire mission was almost 8-days long with most of that time being spent onboard the Mir space station where Sharman conducted medical and agricultural tests such as studying the effects on pansies growing in a weightless environment, photographed the British Isles and participated in an amateur radio linkage with British schoolchildren.
For me, standing on a hill in the Lake District and looking out at fields is just as special. She has also received several honorary degrees from universities throughout the UK. Sharman never returned to space though she made the European Space Agency astronaut shortlists in and , and went on to focus her career on broadcasting and lecturing about space education.
She is also a strong advocate in getting the UK to increase their space funding. She said being in space "taught me that it's people, not material goods, which truly matter". She added: "Up there we had all we needed to survive: the right temperature, food and drink, safety. I gave no thought to the physical items I owned on Earth.
Call for 'more Britons in space'. The Britons who have been to space. No one exciting ever visited. It meant I thought only normal things could happen to me. People often describe me as the first British woman in space, but I was actually the first British person. When Tim Peake went into space, some people simply forgot about me. Self-belief and a can-do attitude changed my life. After take-off we left the atmosphere and suddenly light streamed in through the window.
We were over the Pacific Ocean. The gloriously deep blue seas took my breath away.
